Short answer. The Wombat Wreck lies at about 23 m toward Tangalle, about 45 minutes by boat each way. We run it only in the high season, December to February, on good-weather days and with at least two divers. It is a two-dive trip for $85 ($80 with your own full set), and you need PADI Advanced Open Water or an equivalent certification.

How the trip works
- We leave the centre at 6:30 am for a gear check, a briefing and a 45-minute boat ride out toward Tangalle.
- First dive: the Wombat Wreck, at up to 23 m, with your guide, for 35 to 40 minutes.
- Surface interval with refreshments on the boat as we head back toward the coast.
- Second dive: a relaxed dive on a small rocky reef on the way home.
It is our longest boat trip and takes most of the morning. Our other boat sites are much closer, usually 15 to 20 minutes away, and are covered in the dive sites guide.
Who can dive it
The wreck is at about 23 m, so you need PADI Advanced Open Water or an equivalent certification. Open Water Divers are certified to 18 m. Bring your certification card and logbook: we check them before diving. If you have not dived for a while, ask us about a refresher first.
Only Open Water so far? The PADI Advanced Open Water course takes 2–3 days and includes a deep adventure dive to 30 m. It is $350 with theory in our classroom or $400 with PADI eLearning.
When it runs
Only in the high season, December to February, and only on days when the weather is good, because of the long boat ride. The trip needs at least two divers. We confirm the day before, and if the weather turns, we move you to another day or refund you in full. See the month-by-month picture in the best time to dive guide.
Because it depends on the sea and on numbers, send your request early in your stay and stay flexible by a day or two.
What it costs and what is included
$85 per diver for the two dives, with all dive equipment, tanks and weights and refreshments on the boat. If you bring your own full set (everything except tanks and weights), it is $80. A GoPro to rent is $15. Pay on the day in cash or by card (card payments have a 3% fee). Cancel any time before your activity starts for a full refund. Payment is final once the boat trip starts.
Free tuk-tuk pickup from hotels within about 5 km of the centre, and from Mirissa. Every price is on the prices page, and the trip details are on the fun diving page.
What to bring
