Diving off Mirissa, Weligama and Matara

What we dive, how deep it is and who each site suits.

Moray Point, one of our dive sites off Mirissa

Short answer. We dive reefs and rock walls off Mirissa, Weligama and sometimes Matara, with boat rides of 15 to 20 minutes. Moray Point (5 to 15 m) is the gentle one, Rock Wall drops to 22 m, the Limestone Reef (about 23 m) is beautiful but rarely available, and in the high season the Wombat Wreck (about 23 m) is a special trip toward Tangalle.

Moray Point

Our gentlest boat site, off Mirissa, with moray eels, reef fish and the odd turtle. Depth ranges from 5 to 15 m, which makes it the site for most first dives, PADI Discover Scuba Diving and Open Water training. Dives last 35 to 40 minutes.

Rock Wall

A rocky ridge, also off Mirissa, dropping to 22 m, with schools of fish along the wall. It is a step up from Moray Point, so we use it for certified divers, and Advanced Open Water is needed for sites deeper than 18 m.

Limestone Reef

Striking limestone formations with some coral, swim-throughs, seagrass and sandy patches, at about 23 m. On a good day it is a beautiful dive, but it is mostly unavailable because of conditions, so we never promise it.

Wombat Wreck

A wreck at about 23 m and our longest trip, toward Tangalle, about 45 minutes by boat each way. We go only in the high season (December to February) on good-weather days, leaving at 6:30 am, with at least two divers. You need Advanced Open Water. It is a two-dive trip for $85 (or $80 with your own full set), with a small rocky reef on the way back. Details on the Wombat Wreck page.

Snorkeling sites

Snorkeling is always from the beach, at Polhena or Madiha, in the shallow lagoon. See the turtle snorkeling guide.

How we choose the site each morning

The sea decides. We check swell and visibility, think about who is in the boat and their experience, and pick the site that gives the best dive. See all our sites with depths on the dive sites page.
